History

Original Product Description by Corsair Marine:

Boasting what is arguably the best performance and handling a production sailboat can offer, it is ideal for the experienced sailor who wants ultimate performance, faster than a 70-footer with a crew of three or four (that’s affordable!).

It comes only in the extended Aft-cockpit configuration, and enhanced performance comes from the streamlined interior, a carbon-fiber rig, retractable bowsprit, modified foil design, and a suite of high performance sails, including asymmetrical spinnaker and screacher.

This new Corsair 31-1D is, as always, a dream to sail, trailer and launch.

History of the “1D” Model

Between 2001 and 2002, Howard Enlow—the designer behind the boat featured in Movie Waterworld—began exploring ways to enhance existing F31 models with the taller mast option, known as 31Rs. Pete Melvin designed a new high aspect ratio daggerboard and rudder for improved performance. Additionally, a superior carbon mast, (surpassing the Omohundro option used on the 31R) was developed by Southern Spars. At the time, Curt German of San Diego served as the production manager at Corsair Marine in Chula Vista.

Key Differences 1D versus 31R

1. Slightly larger sails on the same tall rig.

  • 1D v. F-31R (all areas in sq ft)
  • Main 433 v. 429
  • Jib 230 v. 218
  • Screecher 488 v. 429
  • Spin 1050 v. 996

2. New high aspect ratio foils

  • New Daggerboard – Carbon High Aspect
  • New Rudder – Carbon High Aspect

3. Faired outer floats.

4. Canting Rig

5. SoutherSpars Carbon Mast (not Omohundro)

(I’m not sure if all 1D models came the superior Southern Spars carbon mast like Condor did)

Mentions and Memories of “Condor

Philip Styne writes: “I raced on the boat (Condor) multiple times with Peter and luminaries Keith Notary and Todd Hudgins ( Keith was Randy Smyth crew in Barcelona Olympics and Todd my crew in my National win in Buzzards Bay) We jibed probably a hundred times going to Key West one year in front of Henry  Enloe who went in to big tri fame with Mighty Merlot beating them by 5 boat lengths after 170 miles.”

Randy Smyth recalls: “I remember “Condor”. She was always fast right from the start.”

First Race mention: July 2nd 2005 Chicago race to Mackinac. Condor went on to win the majority of races she entered and consistently secured line honors.

Condor History under Thomas

I discovered Condor listed on Yachtworld after a long search that began even before I could afford such a boat. My sailing background includes building fast skiffs, which made F-boats an obvious choice – as you can sail and rig them essentially just like a large skiff. Determined to rig her for single-handed sailing—a feat some (many) claimed was impossible— made me document the process in a series of videos.

After purchase and transport from Canyon Lake, Texas to San Rafael, CA in the spring/summer of 2021, Condor underwent a thorough six-month refit. No expenses where spared. This was -and is- a labor of love. The boat was then sailed exclusively for personal enjoyment (not raced) out of Loch Lomond Marina in San Rafael, CA.

Upon arrival, the boat underwent a second two-month refit.
